Chapter Sixteen

“WE NEED TO talk!”

Damn, okay. Talk about abrupt, Rand stood in the doorway of his house, staring up at Slade, who took up the whole area with those massive shoulders and that height of his. A pool of dread began to form in the pit of Rand’s stomach. Was this the moment when Slade pulled the plug on his visits with Luka, or had he come to talk about what happened in town the other day? Had he decided to punish Rand for breaking up his attempt to destroy Dimitri, and if so, would he try to use Luka to do it and deny him access to the mate he was rapidly falling for?

“Normal people actually call and make sure people are going to be home and not in the middle of something before they beat on the door,” Rand scolded, feeling himself grow prickly, his anxiety already ramping up even as he was backing out of the entryway to allow Slade to come in.

“Never said I was normal.”

His voice was as rumbling and abrupt as each of the other times they’d spoken. Only this time, there was a hint of sarcastic wit to soften the tone a little.

“Besides, I called the clinic, and you weren’t there, so process of elimination brought me here.”

Now that made Rand bristle a little. “So basically, you figured if I wasn’t working I had to be here since it’s impossible to imagine that I might actually have something I like to do outside of the clinic or friends I might be spending time with?”

“You said it, not me,” Slade replied. “Though if I’d known that was the case, I’d have just come here first.”

“I’m confused.”

“You might not be if you’d stop talking and listen for a change.”

Rand rolled his eyes, edgy and restless like nearly every other time he’d encountered this wolf.

Mate, his wolf reminded him. Yeah, mate who doesn’t exactly want us, Rand reminded him, hoping his wolf would shut the hell up and not complicate matters. It had been hard enough backing away from the hug he’d thought Slade was about to give him in the parking lot, not wanting the first hug between them to be out of impulsive gratitude instead of actual affection. He just wished they could fast forward to the affection part so he’d know for sure they were really headed in the right direction. Gripping the door tighter, Rand inclined his head, hoping Slade would get the point and come in already before he let all the heat out.

“Is it true you’re only working a day or two at the clinic right now?”

“Yeah. With the weather being the way it is, wolves have been staying in, which means few appointments and even fewer accidents. The new doc has been handling everything except my counseling sessions.”

“Can’t he take those too?”

“He could, but I’d actually like to keep some part of my job, if you don’t mind, or are we back to you suggesting I pack up my
